SANTA CRUZ — Detectives with the Santa Cruz Police Department have identified 25-year-old Jose Alonso Reyes of Capitola as the culprit in a shooting that occurred on Monday night, July 11th, in the 1600 block of Mission Street.

Police served two search warrants — one at his place of employment and the other at his home in Capitola.

Reyes was apprehended at work, along with a backpack containing the gun believed to be the weapon used in the shooting. The backpack also contained the clothing described by witnesses during the initial investigation.

The investigation also revealed the shooting to be gang-related and not just a random carjacking as initially reported.

Reyes was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a loaded firearm in public, vehicle theft, and participating in a criminal street gang. His bail has been set at $200,000.

Despite the arrest, the investigation is ongoing and anyone with relevant information is strongly encouraged to contact the Santa Cruz Police Department at 831-420-5820.
