Serial Car Burglar Arrested

WATSONVILLE — Police have concluded another burglary case with the arrest of 30-year-old Maksym Arestov, after surveillance footage put him at the scene of one of his break-ins. He stands charged with four felony burglaries and two counts of using a stolen credit card.

Over the past month, police had responded to a rash of vehicle burglaries in the area of Penny Lane. Arestov would allegedly break into vehicles parked near local business while customers were shopping. He would occasionally even use credit cards found in purses at local stores, and officers were able to identify him from surveillance footage at one of the stores.

Arestov was also linked to two other burglaries in the city, as well as several others throughout the country. At least two burglaries in Capitola, one involving both a vehicle burglary and a stolen vehicle, are believed to be linked to Arestov.

In total, Arestov has been charged in four felony burglary cases, one vehicle theft, and two counts of false use of a credit card. The total monetary damage from his actions is estimated to be in the thousands.

Arestov is held at the Santa Cruz County Jail on $100,000 bail.
