SAN JOSE – The San Jose police Department has announced the arrest of a wanted shooting suspect who is thought to be connected with the shooting of ten vehicles. The first incident was reported on May 4 at 12:30 A.M, with the second occurring on June 2 at approximately 12:50 A.M. Then on June 30 two shootings were reported, one at 12:35 AM, with a second reported before 12:45 AM. A third shooting was reported on July 2 at 12:30 A.M.
With more than two weeks since the last shooting it was thought that the shootings had stopped, but then on July 21 at 12:10 A.M, another two shootings occurred within ten minutes of each other, and less than 24 hours later another shooting occurred around 1:10 A.M. Two shootings occurred back to back on August 4 around 3:22 A.M. The last known shooting occurred on August 5 between 12:50-1:00 A.M.
All of the shootings occurred near the intersections of Blossom Hill, Poughkeepsie, and Monterey road in San Jose. A black Dodge Charger was seen near all of the shootings.
According to the San Jose Police Department, “On Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at about 5:15 PM, the suspect (Michael Lewis) wanted in connection with shooting at occupied vehicles along the Blossom Hill Road corridor was arrested in San Jose by officers of the San Jose PD Covert Response Unit.”
On August 14, suspect Lewis was arrested for unrelated charges while he was following up on leads for this case.
Lewis was charged with felony evasion along with reckless driving, delaying and obstructing an investigation, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
After a brief investigation by the San Jose PD Assaults Unit they were able to obtain a search warrant for his home, in which they were able to locate a handgun and shell casings determined to have been fired from the same handgun used at the scene of the shootings.
Chief Eddie Garcia said, “The work that the men and women of this department have done in the last three weeks is nothing short of amazing! In light of everything this department is going through, our officers’ dedication to the residents of this city is beyond reproach.”
“I commend the San Jose Police Department for their exceptional work to arrest an extremely dangerous suspect without any loss of life -— our officers continue to exceed expectations at a time when they remain historically shorthanded,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo.
Lewis will be booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on 4 counts of attempted murder and an outstanding felony warrant for felon in possession of a firearm.
