Berkeley police arrested 22-year-old Theodis Evans on September 16, after receiving reports of a carjacking and then a vehicle crashing into a house, during an incident that halted nearby railroad traffic.
The incident began at 12:06 p.m., near the North Berkeley BART train station. Before it was over, a police officer and a citizen received minor injuries, but neither were taken to a hospital.
“The carjacking victim was sitting in car. The suspect punched the victim and opened the driver’s side door and pulled the victim out. Shortly afterwards, we responded to a call on a felony hit and run, where a vehicle hit a building,” said Lt. Kevin Schofield. “A witness saw him and helped guide us to railroad tracks, where the suspect was arrested.”
The car was abandoned after it crashed through a fence and hit a house on the 1500 block of Sixth Street, near Jones Street, several blocks west of the BART station, closer to the nearby Union Pacific Railroad tracks, where the suspect had fled.
Train traffic was stopped in both directions, while police pursued the suspect. He ran onto the tracks while a train was approaching, but was not hit by the train. Next, the suspect got into a fight with police officer and injured him. “The officer’s injuries were minor and he was able to complete his shift,” Schofield said.
Evans was taken to a hospital, but it’s unclear, whether he was injured during his arrest or had another medical condition. He was later booked and taken to Santa Rita Jail, with bail set at $260,000.
He was arrested on several charges, including carjacking and felony hit and run with injuries, possession of a controlled substance and injection device, use a deadly weapon, resisting an officer and leaving the scene of an accident. Evans was previously on probation.
