SALINAS — Police have announced the arrest of 31-year-old Evan Smith-Sweeney. He is wanted out of Marina for stealing a truck and has since been turned over to the Marina Police Department.
On the morning of October 10th, Salinas police were assisting Marina police in their pursuit of Smith-Sweeney following the theft in Marina. The chase ended on Coleridge Drive in Salinas, where officers set up a perimeter and began a search.
At around 4:30 PM, a resident called police to say he’d seen a man jump over his neighbor’s fence, giving a description that matched the suspect from earlier that day. A second caller shortly thereafter reported seeing the same man jump his fence and attempt to steal a bike from his yard.
A plainclothes detective then saw the same man walking near the Star Market Shopping Center and alerted a sergeant, who tried to make contact. The suspect took off on foot and a second chase ensued.
The suspect ran through the shopping center and into an open beauty salon. Police were hot on his heels and eventually chased him into O’Reilly Automotive, where an officer attempted to subdue him with a taser but was unsuccessful. The chase continued out the back door where he was cornered by additional officers, one of whom also deployed a taser — successfully, this time.
Smith-Sweeney was taken into custody and booked into Monterey County Jail.
