EL MONTE — On October 21st of last year, 25-year-old Juan Vidal was working at the Jack-in-the-Box in the 9200 block of Flair Drive in El Monte.

On that day, 20-year-old Louie Francisco Herrera of San Gabriel attempted to rob the restaurant.  He was unsuccessful in that attempt. Instead, he shot Vidal in the chest and killed him.

After a news conference and a release of surveillance video, someone contacted authorities and identified Herrera as a possible suspect.

On January 9th, Herrera was arrested and charged with the crime.  A special circumstance is included in the charge that he “personally and intentionally discharged a handgun,” killing the victim.

If convicted, he faces the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
