Sacramento Man Turn Himself In After Fatal Hit-and-Run

SACRAMENTO — On Friday March 17, 2017, a Sacramento man turned himself in to authorities after hitting a bicyclist with his car, killing him, and fleeing the scene.

Wilfredo Cortes (47) was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at approximately 9:25 p.m. at Marysville and Los Robles Boulevards. The victim was struck by Cortes’s car in the Hagginwood neighborhood. Cortes drove off heading northbound on Marysville Boulevard.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the cyclist unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Sacramento Police released surveillance photos of the vehicle suspected in the crash, which was described as a blue full-sized work truck with a white utility bed, tool boxes, and rack. Investigators said there may have been damage to the right front headlight.

The Sacramento Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased once next of kin has been notified.

Cortes was arrested at the Police Department’s Marysville Boulevard facility and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a felony count of hit-and-run with death. He is being held at the jail on a $75,000 bail, and is scheduled to appear in court today, Tuesday, March 21, 2017.
