VENTURA — Early in the evening of March 18th, multiple 911 Emergency calls were received by the Ventura Police Department’s Command Center reporting “two males in a physical altercation,” as described in the VPD Watch Commander’s report. Upon arrival at the mid-town Ventura location, an unconscious 63-year-old male was found with “moderate injuries” to his face.
The immediately ensuing investigation established that the suspect had departed the area well before the cops showed up, and that there had earlier been a violent confrontation between the alleged suspect and a female who “was holding a small child” at the time.
Witness accounts at the scene indicated that the battered 63-year-old male had observed this episode and made an attempt to intervene, whereupon the assailant chased him and confronted him about the fact that he had seen the attack upon the female victim, subsequently beating the man unconscious.
At that point, the suspect fled the scene with his female victim and the small child in his car. Three hours later, the female victim “arrived at Ventura County Medical center for treatment of injuries she sustained” at the hands of the suspect, whereupon the child in her custody was found to be “suffering from serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.”
The following day, March 19th, detectives made contact with 34-year-old Ventura resident Enrique Cardona as he was driving through a West Harrison Street neighborhood.
He was contacted and taken into custody at that point, and transported to Ventura County Jail where he was booked on charges of felony battery with serious bodily injury, witness intimidation, domestic violence, and parole violation, with his bail set at $540,000.
