LOS ANGELES — 55-year-old Carlos Maria Vallarta Fausto, a dentist in the LA area, gave himself up to authorities, facing two felony charges of insurance fraud. He allegedly charged insurers over $31,000 in fraudulent billings.
It began with a complaint from an insurer. The resulting investigation revealed that Dr. Fausto billed insurance companies for treatments that he did not perform.
His actions spanned a seven year period from 2007 through 2014.
Fausto was arrested and his bail was set at $25,000.
“Of the various kinds of Insurance fraud we investigate at the Department of Insurance, medical provider fraud has the largest average suspected losses per case,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “Medical providers are in a position of great trust, and unfortunately, in this case Dr. Fausto broke that trust when he allegedly billed for services never performed.”
