Melvin Whitehead with seized gun and drugs
FRESNO — Citizen support helped to nab a fleeing gang member felon in Fresno.
On Wednesday, police observed a man riding his bicycle against traffic and attempted to stop him. The man fled on his bicycle but, as he did, a citizen tried to grab him and knocked him down, enough to slow him down and help ensure his capture.
28-year-old Melvin Whitehead had an outstanding warrant out related to narcotics. When police arrested him, his backback contained 40 grams of meth and a .44 caliber handgun with 3 live rounds chambered in it.
Investigation revealed that the revolver had been reported stolen out of Clovis over two decades ago.
FPD says, “We recommend citizens call 911 if they observe crime instead of confronting suspects on their own, however, in this instance, the officers thanked the citizen for his help in capturing this suspect.”
