POMONA — Police officers responded to an “Unknown Trouble” call on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 1:22 A.M. regarding a suspect who’d forced his way into an apartment at 777 East Third Street and began destroying the furnishings.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a bloody, wrench-wielding, highly-agitated and violent Javier S. Navarro Jr. (26) of Pomona. Several residents had already escaped.
As the Patrol Division positioned themselves outside, the suspect greeted officers with a bevy of hurled objects, including a vacuum cleaner, tools, glass cups, sticks, and knives.
The suspect was bloody from self-sustained injuries prior to police arriving on scene. He then shattered all of the windows. Officers attempted to negotiate with Navarro, but to no avail. Officers announced that the suspect was possibly under the influence of narcotics and experiencing a mental health crisis.
A successful tactical response resulted in the suspect being taken into custody without further injury. One officer was struck on the head by the wrench-wielding suspect, but the officer’s protective helmet spared him from harm.
Navarro was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation and medical treatment for his self-sustained injuries.
The crimes: 245PC, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, 594 PC Vandalism, 459PC Burglary and 5150 WIC (Mental Health).
