ANDERSON — On Friday, July 28th, just before 12:30 PM, Anderson PD received reports of a disturbance at Humble Joe’s restaurant. As officers were en route, they were advised by dispatch that two suspects had since been seen fleeing the establishment on foot.
The owner and a Good Samaritan chased the suspects — a man and a woman — for around 1/3 of a mile before finally catching up to them and detaining them until police arrived.
The suspects were soon identified as Ashley Rose Slavens (27) of Anderson and Joseph Dexter Atchley (27) of Redding.
The two had apparently gone into Humble Joe’s for a meal. When their bill came ($33.14), they gathered their belongings and stepped outside for a cigarette. Neither apparently made any effort to settle the bill or even mentioned the check.
After the two had been in the parking lot for some time, the owner stepped outside and asked if they planned on paying for their food. That was when the pair tried to run.
Officers later determined the two had never intended to pay for their food, as they didn’t have the money.
Anderson PD issued a citizen’s arrest on behalf of the owner of Humble Joe’s, then formally arrested the two for defrauding an innkeeper.
They are now housed at the Shasta County Jail.
