Martin Harlan
DUBLIN – Already in custody for a prior carjacking incident in Hayward involving a police chase, gunfire, and car crashes, an inmate at Santa Rita Jail was arrested inside the county jail August 8, for additional charges related to shooting at Stockton police officers.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged a transient Martin Harlan, 26, with carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault of with a deadly weapon on a police officer, felony hit and run, felon in possession of a firearm, and other gun charges.
Harlan is accused of stealing a truck on the 2700 block of Gamble Court on August 5, and shooting at the owner, who called Hayward police and followed the thief in another vehicle.
A responding police officer fired at the stolen truck when the suspect steered it towards a patrol car, but no one was hit. The suspect crashed into several vehicles, and attempted to run away, but police caught and arrested Harlan, on August 5 in Castro Valley.
Hayward police investigating the carjacking incident soon learned that Harlan was also being investigated for allegedly shooting at Stockton police officers during a June 26 car chase.
Stockton police served Harlan an arrest warrant on August 8 for a lengthy list of charges, including attempted murder of a police officer—while he was conveniently already in the jailhouse.
Harlan is no stranger to law enforcement. His record includes 11 arrests in Alameda and Stanislaus counties, on charges ranging from battery and burglary, to drug charges, robbery and vehicle theft, among other charges.
