Perry’s knife at the scene
RANCHO CUCAMONGA — On Monday morning, SBSD Sergeant Kimberly Watkins responded to a welfare check near Haven Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in the Hobby Lobby parking lot.
SBSD had received a call from a man who was speaking incoherently. Sgt. Watkins came upon 22-year-old Kenneth Elijah Perry, who soon became combative and pulled out a knife.
An incident ensued in which the officer suffered stab wounds and lacerations, and she fired her weapon several times at the suspect. He was grazed on his thigh by gunfire.
Sgt. Watkins held Perry at bay with her drawn weapon until backup arrived to arrest him, then went to the hospital for treatment. She is in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive.
