Suspect stabs girlfriend multiple times in her abdomen, kills Sunnyvale DPS K9
Jax, End Of Watch 10/31/2017
SUNNYVALE – The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety has verified an officer-involved shooting of a Hispanic male suspect on October 31, just after 1:00 PM after reports he had attacked his girlfriend with a knife, stabbing her in the abdomen multiple times.
Officers received a call concerning the stabbing that had occurred in the 500 block of E. Weddell Avenue. Responding officers tried to make contact with 25-year-old Jesus Birelas-Contreras but he was uncooperative to their commands.
A K9 was then released in an attempt to subdue the suspect.
During the brief encounter between Birelas-Contreras and Sunnyvale DPS K9 Jax, Birelas-Contreras stabbed the police K9 as the German shepherd attempted to subdue him. Moments later the suspect was then fatally shot by a Sunnyvale DPS Lieutenant, fearing for his safety as the suspect threw a knife at the officer.
Sunnyvale DPS K9 Jax also died at a local veterinarian hospital due to multiple fatal stab wounds obtained during the brief encounter with the estranged male suspect. The woman Birelas-Contreras stabbed is expected to survive.
The 19-year veteran with the Sunnyvale DPS who fired the fatal shot was placed on routine paid administrative leave due to subsequent routine procedures enacted when he fired his service weapon.
