PALOMA // On November 16th just before 5 AM, police were dispatched to investigate reports of a trespassing.
They found a man and a woman inside a garage, at which point the man told them his car was “stuck in the mud nearby.”
Indeed, there was a truck and a trailer blocking a driveway nearby, but deputies determined they’d been stolen from the Linden Irrigation District over in San Joaquin County at some point during the night.
While the female subject was questioned and released at the scene, the male suspect — identified as 26-year-old Brett Schmidt of Modesto — was arrested and booked into the Calaveras County Jail on charges of trespassing, resisting arrest, and vehicle theft.
His bail has been set to $60,000.
