PLEASANTON — Police officers found a man covered with blood outside a retail store just before sunrise on Monday, and arrested him on suspicion of trying to kill his own mother.
Police were on the lookout for a man who fled as they approached him in a hospital parking lot on January 15. The suspect was nevertheless apprehended a few minutes later.
Officers were dispatched at 6:44 a.m. in response to a report of a woman being assaulted outside Sanford Health Care-ValleyCare, located at 5555 W. Positas Boulevard.
The suspect fled towards a nearby shopping district, where officers located him standing in front of store at 3657 Old Santa Rita Road.
Disheveled and seeming agitated, he refused to comply with an officer’s directions, according to the police. He reportedly struggled and resisted when they attempted to restrain him.
An officer fired a taser to temporarily incapacitate him with an electric shock—then arrested him at 6:56 a.m., without further incident.
The suspect, 26-year-old Livermore resident Brian A. Bertoli, was booked early January 16 at Santa Rita Jail, where he remains in custody with bail denied.
Bertoli is charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to rape, battery with serious bodily injury, and obstructing a police officer. He is scheduled to appear for arraignment on January 17 at the East County Hall of Justice.
The victim, his mother, sustained major head injuries, a laceration above one of her eyes and cuts on her hands, which were evidently caused by a sharp weapon. She was transported to another hospital for treatment of possible head trauma due to the severity of her injuries.
