SANTA MARIA — On December 18, 2017, and January 14, 2018, two incidents of sexual assault and burglary occurred, perpetrated by an Uber driver who targeted intoxicated women.
39-year-old Alfonso Alarconnunez was arrested near his home on Wednesday, January 17, in connection with the crimes. Investigation revealed that the suspect would solicit female fares who were intoxicated and then commit his crimes by escorting them to their residence, sexually assaulting them, and stealing property from them.
The stolen property includes cell phones, laptops, and jewelry. In addition, the investigation revealed that “Alarconnunez would collect payment through a Venmo pay service to disguise his identity and his Uber records.”
The suspect was charged with rape of an unconscious victim, rape of an intoxicated victim, oral copulation of an intoxicated victim, and residential burglary.
Alarconnunez’ bail was set at $200,000.
The SLOPD reminds the public that Uber and Lyft “offer legitimate and responsible services,” and urge its customers to confirm the identity of the driver who picks them up, and to pay for the service through Uber and Lyft.
