LAGUNA NIGUEL – The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Reconstruction Team (MART) has announced the result of a year-long investigation into the felony hit-and-run of Stephen Schenkenberger, who was struck down on his bicycle Super Bowl Sunday on 2/5/17.

The investigation led to the suspect who fled the scene in his car, later identified as 53-year-old Timothy Anthony Cronin. Preliminary reports show that Cronin may also have been intoxicated while on his way home from a Super Bowl party when the incident occurred that day at around 8:50 PM.

The victim was hit on his bicycle while crossing Niguel Road from Ridgeway in the City of Laguna Niguel. Blunt-force trauma injuries caused Schenkenberger to lose mobility, followed by several months of rehabilitation.

OCSD traffic investigators announced, “Over the course of the past year, MART worked diligently to obtain evidence regarding the circumstances of the case and presented it to the District Attorney’s office for review. Based on the evidence collected, the DA’s office issued a warrant for Felony Hit & Run and DUI for Cronin. On Feb. 4, 2018, Super Bowl Sunday, at approximately 9 a.m. MART personnel observed suspect Cronin attempting to leave his residence. Cronin was contacted and taken into custody without incident. Cronin was later booked at the Orange County Jail.”

Awaiting arraignment, the suspect faces felony penalties for DUI and Hit and Run.
