FULLERTON – Reports of a child struck by a car sent Fullerton Police on-scene Saturday at 2:14 PM to the 1400 block of Lombard Street. Officers encountered a 6-yr-old female struck down on the sidewalk with life-threatening injuries.
Immediate transport to a local trauma center provided extensive measures to the significant injuries before the heartbreaking result: the child who had been playing on the sidewalk on a beautiful sunny day was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The tragedy was preceded by Maximo Delgado (52) of Anaheim driving eastbound on Gage Ave. on a suspended license in a 1990 Toyota 4 Runner as he attempted to make a southbound turn onto Lombard Street.
Fullerton PD reports state that Delgado lost control of the vehicle as he tried to make the turn, drove onto the sidewalk, continued to drive southbound on the sidewalk after striking the 6-year-old victim, then re-entered the roadway and collided with a vehicle parked on Lombard Street, where his vehicle came to a stop.
Fullerton PD states, “Delgado remained at the scene and cooperated with Investigators. On-scene investigation indicated that Delgado was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Preliminary breath alcohol tests revealed Delgado’s blood alcohol content to be .23% BAC.”
After his arrest for felony DUI, felony vehicular manslaughter, and driving on a suspended license, Delgado was transported to Fullerton City Jail and held in lieu of $2 million bail.
Fullerton PD announced, “This tragic event is yet another stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence.”
