SANTA ANA — What began as a traffic stop on Monday night near the 29000 block of W. 1st Street ended with the discovery of a hand grenade.
The driver who was pulled over informed law enforcement that he had a hand grenade in his car. Detectives spotted the “modified pineapple grenade” on the front seat.
44-year-old Gregorio Rojas is listed as a documented gang member driving with a suspended license. The entire area was closed off and the Orange County Bomb Squad was called in.
A robot secured the grenade, which was determined to be operable, and detonated it safely.
A further search of the suspects home produced four loaded handguns and meth. Rojas was booked for possession of a destructive device, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a controlled substance with a firearm.
