A ShotSpotter in the area of 48 East California Avenue detected gunfire on March 26. Fresno Southwest Special Response Team Officers Besoyan and Hernandez were first on the scene and quickly and accurately collected witness accounts which they relayed to assisting units.
Southwest Patrol Officer Borrego was one of the assisting units in the area who received the description of the vehicle involved in the non-injury shooting.
Keeping a vigilant eye, he soon spotted the vehicle traveling at high speeds. So as not to alert the driver and cause a high speed chase during rush hour, Officer Borrego kept a safe distance and updated air support of the vehicle’s direction until they could take over.
California Highway Patrol and Fresno County Sheriff Air Units followed the vehicle as the driver made his way into the parking lot of the Double Tree Hilton Hotel on 2233 Ventura Street.
The driver turned out to be 23-year old Alex Oliver. He is a known member of the Strother Boy Street Gang who is currently on felony probation after being convicted for carrying a loaded firearm in a public place.
Oliver tried to evade capture by making his way into the hotel but he and his girlfriend, who was in the car with him, were detained. Also with them during this entire ordeal was their 2-year old child.
Ultimately, Oliver was charged with violating his probation, discharging a firearm negligently, assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, and endangering a child. He awaits arraignment at Fresno County Jail.
