Goleta – The fine art of burglary requires a certain degree of careful planning, a modicum of situational awareness, and reasonably good luck…all elements apparently absent in the circumstances surrounding an attempted burglary that took place in the wee hours of April 10th in the City of Goleta.
According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, it was just after 4:00 a.m. at the Calle Real Shopping Center when, as luck would have it, “a Sheriff’s K9 team was patrolling” through the area and unexpectedly spotted the shattered storefront window of a real estate office.
With his suspicions aroused and his dog suddenly on alert, the deputy took a closer look and saw “a suspect inside the business with a flashlight apparently in the act of committing a burglary.”
The guy inside the real estate office poking around in the dark with his flashlight was 46-year-old Boston, Massachusetts resident Joseph Rose, who was apparently so focused on his nefarious endeavors that he failed to realize there was a uniformed deputy with a mean dog standing outside making a radio call to summon additional resources to the scene.
While Rose continued his work, deputies from the Goleta Valley Patrol Bureau, Isla Vista Foot Patrol, and officers with the California Highway Patrol all arrived at the shopping center storefront.
It wasn’t long after that Rose—still oblivious to what was waiting for him outside—stepped “through the shattered glass door” carrying “several bags of stolen property.” One can only imagine Rose’s surprised reaction as he was suddenly confronted with a platoon of uniformed cops greeting him with handcuffs.
Rose was taken into custody without incident, transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, and booked on a charge of commercial burglary with his bail set at $20,000.
