A school’s safety zone stretches 1000 feet past its physical perimeter. A criminal offender may be hit with an additional charge if they commit a crime within a school’s safety zone. Such was the case Tuesday afternoon.
While on patrol, Southwest Fresno Officers Barragan and Espino cruised by Jefferson Elementary on Mariposa Ave where they spotted a vehicle not 500 feet from the school, loitering. Upon contacting the driver, 24-year old Cody Mansfield, it became immediately apparent that he had, just moments before, experimented with illegal drugs.
Mansfield was detained while officers searched the car. They recovered a .22 caliber revolver and several rounds of ammunition. Mansfield not only claimed possession of the firearm but admitted to recently discharging the weapon.
Mansfield faces several charges from his drugs use and illegal possession of a weapon. He is also being charged for violating the Gun Free School Zone Act for having an unauthorized firearm within the school safety zone. He was booked into Fresno County Jail.
