SAN RAMON — Three men were arrested following a high-speed police chase, which ended abruptly when the driver exited from a freeway and promptly crashed into a roadside utility box.
Police received a call on May 7 shortly after 6 a.m. from an employee at the Home Depot store, located at 2750 Crow Canyon Road, who reported that three men had just sped away after loading stolen power tools into a car.
A roughly 4-mile chase commenced when an unmarked San Ramon police car began tailing the suspects leaving the store, and onto northbound Interstate 680. Several more patrol cars soon joined the chase at speeds reportedly up to 100 mph.
The driver exited from the freeway at Stone Valley Road in Alamo, where the driver apparently lost control of the car before crashing and rendering it undriveable.
Three men fled from the car and San Ramon officers nabbed the two passengers almost immediately, but the driver got away temporarily. Though the trio soon found themselves reunited inside the West County Detention Facility in Richmond.
Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies and the California Highway Patrol helped San Ramon police search for the driver, who was apprehended about two hours later hiding off the side of a roadway.
Daniel Hooper of San Pablo and Kamoni Gaines of Richmond, both 26-years old, were each arrested and booked for grand theft and conspiracy to commit a crime. Bond was set at $30,000 for Hooper. Gaines who’s also charged with parole violation is ineligible for release on bail.
The driver John Williams, a 31-year-old Vallejo resident, was charged with grand theft, conspiracy to commit a crime and evading a police officer while disregarding safety. Bond for his release was set at $90,000.
