BERKELEY — Three 21-year-old men and a 16-year-old juvenile were arrested following two weekend shooting incidents, which sent one victim to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
Police are investigating shootings that occurred on Sunday morning and Saturday night in southwest Berkeley, an area of the city where at least 30 shooting incidents have occurred over the last three years—many believed related to gang activity.
The most recent shooting occurred on the morning of May 13 near the intersection of Dwight Way and 8th Street, close to a popular neighborhood coffeehouse with outdoor seating.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 10 a.m. on the 2300 block of 8th Street, where they found a car damaged by gunfire, and then one block away officers located a 27-year-old man suffering from bullet wounds. The gunshot victim was hospitalized for severe injuries, but is expected to recover.
Later the same day at 3 p.m., Berkeley police arrested William E. Robinson of Richmond, who was booked at Santa Rita Jail, charged with assault with a firearm on a person, shooting at an inhabited dwelling or vehicle, and violation of parole. Robinson was denied bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on May 16.
Two other men were arrested in connection with a shooting near San Pablo Park on May 12, which occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m., when several shoots were fired in rapid succession near the intersection of Russell and Mabel streets No injuries were reported.
Berkeley residents Kenneth Brown and Reginald Jackson were arrested May 12 shortly after 10 p.m., along with an unidentified 16-year-old, and officers recovered two firearms. Both men are being held at Berkeley City Jail, with bail set at $180,000 and $200,000 respectively.
Brown and Jackson are each facing several weapons-related charges and are scheduled to be arraigned on May 16. Both men were also previously arrested on weapons charges by Berkeley police.
