VISALIA – A hit-and-run driver tried to flee after an accident last Wednesday at Garden and Tulare Streets. Bystanders in turn attempted to hold the driver, who fought back in response.
24-year-old Dean Carpenter ran to a nearby apartment complex in his continuing attempt to flee. Officers arrived and citizens directed them to the area where he had fled.
A K-9 assisted in locating Carpenter in a backyard near Bridge and Laurel Streets. The suspect assaulted the K-9 and a police officer before his detainment.
Carpenter’s charges include assault on a K-9, battery on a police officer, hit and run and prowling.
Due to the pursuit, Washington Elementary School was placed on a lock-down as a precaution.
