Santa Barbara County – Recently a midnight prowler unsuccessfully visited Carpinteria. The City of Carpinteria is truly a “small town.” It is a place where everyone feels safe from the world of crime. Residents go to bed in a city where the sidewalks roll up at sunset. Everyone expects to get a decent night’s rest.
That expectation may be a thing of the past if the June 20th arrest of 37-year-old Santa Barbara resident Salvador Navarro is any indication of things to come.
According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, it was just after midnight when deputies “assigned to the Coastal Bureau” rolled up to a Rincon Hill Road home. They were responding to a call for service reporting “people believed to be breaking into an unoccupied house.”
But the house was not “unoccupied. ” In fact, the “72-year-old homeowner” slept soundly inside. Apparently Navarro entered the home through an unlocked door.
But when the cops arrived, Navarro hastily exited and walked right into their arms. Because the deputies arrived on scene so quickly, “Navarro did not have a chance to steal anything from the residence.”
Apparently Navarro had “three misdemeanor warrants issued for his arrest.” These warrants were pursuant to his prior activities involving controlled substances. Navarro’s charges are prowling, trespassing and a trio of warrants. His bail is $10,000.
