LAKEPORT -A jealous man shot what he thought was a supposed rival for his girlfriend. The shooting occurred on June 9 at 11:40 pm on the 1300 block of Soda Bay Road.
The victim was still conscious and able to talk to deputies. He said someone shot him as he walked on Mission Racheria Road. He then ran to his aunt’s help for help.
Officers identified 46-year-old Leonso Paul Rangel as the shooter. They collected evidence at the shooting scene.
The next morning the victim also identified Rangel as his shooter. Apparently Rangel thought that the victim tried to have a relationship with his girlfriend.
Finally, at noon on June 10, deputies arrested the suspect at his home. After providing a statement, they then charged Rangel for attempted murder, assault, probation violation and firearm possession.
There is no bail at this time, due to a probation violation.
Although Rangel admitted to the shooting, he said “he was only trying to scare the victim and did not mean to hit him.”
