Santa Barbara County – A resistant suspect met a K-9….guess who won? The mere sound of a barking dog is enough to intimidate most people into quickly altering their behavior. Apparently 52-year-old Carpinteria resident Russell Bridges isn’t “most people.”
It took more than mere barking to get Bridges to comply with the orders of SBCSD deputies who arrived at his house on the night of July 17th. Deputies came to a Carpinteria address in response to a report of a “domestic violence altercation.”
Black-and-whites rolled onto the scene and deputies got the victim out of the house. However, Bridges “refused to come out” or to comply with the several lawful orders given by the cops. From inside the residence, Bridges made it clear that he was resisting arrest.
At that point, to “overcome the resistance and prevent unnecessary injury to the deputies,” a K9 team arrived on the scene. Once again, deputies gave Bridges “ample opportunity to comply and surrender.” And once again Bridges declined their offer. Deputies made a physical attempt to take him into custody, which Bridges physically resisted. He continued trying to “shut the deputies out of his residence.” Moments later, a deputy “deployed” the K-9, promptly taking Bridges into custody.
Once in handcuffs, Bridges went to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in his confrontation with the trained canine. Following medical attention, Bridges went to Santa Barbara County Jail. There he faces charges of corporal injury of a spouse, violently resisting arrest, and resisting arrest. His bail is $25,000.
