FRESNO – The passage of Proposition 47 has possibly opened the door to cases like the one Chief Jerry Dyer alludes to.
In an interview with KSEE24, Dyer said, “We have one individual that we have arrested 83 times since Prop 47 passed. 83 times – all of these for petty thefts.”
He mentioned an individual who, in one day, went to 8 different Home Depots for petty thefts. Dyer said, “They know that the consequences for committing these crimes aren’t there.”
Chief Dyer added, “That’s (petty theft) their job, that’s their career.”
Although murders in Fresno have dropped this year, there is a spike in thefts. These include a rash of snatch and grab types of theft.
Finally, Dyer said, “We’ve adjusted to the weakening of the law. We shouldn’t accept that.”
