SANTA CRUZ – The man approached two people sitting in their car and said, “That’s my stuff, give it to me.” He pressed a knife against one of the victims.
The robbery occurred at west Cliff Drive and Swift Street. The robber made off with “iPhones and clothing.”
Then the suspect drove away in a Toyota 4-Runner accompanied by a black dog.
A SCPD officer soon spotted the getaway vehicle and stopped it. The driver stepped out, talked with the officer briefly and then jumped back in and drove away.
Next came the pursuit, and then the crash into a large boulder and wooden post.
Then came the chase on foot. This ended in the parking lot of the Scotts Valley Hilton.
44-year-old Matthew Stevens is no stranger to law enforcement. He is currently on probation. Now he faces new charges of armed robbery, probation violation and felony reckless evading.
SCPD praises the teamwork involved in Stevens’ capture. This includes – CHP, AIR support, SVPD and SCSO.
On their FB page the SCPD relates that “the dog is okay.”
