2 Men Arrested for Passing Fraudulent Checks at Wells Fargo Bank
MILL VALLEY — They tried passing fraudulent checks. A bank is probably the worst place to cash bad checks, but that doesn’t stop some people from trying. Authorities arrested two men on September 18 for attempting to pass fraudulent checks at Wells Fargo Bank.
Police response was overwhelming at the bank located at 18 Miller Avenue in Mill Valley. Due to a communications mishap, authorities initially believed a more serious bank robbery was in progress at 2:15 p.m.
Apparently, one teller told another teller to phone police, but the second teller misinterpreted the situation as a robbery. This resulted in four law enforcement agencies responding to a 911 call.
In addition to Mill Valley police, officers from Sausalito and Tiburon rushed to Wells Fargo. Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office also showed up.
Mill Valley officers arrested one of the suspects while he was still inside the bank. Demetrious L. Hayden, 50 of Richmond, was taken into custody at 2:19 p.m.
The second suspect managed to flee from the bank. Mill Valley officers apprehended Albert F. Sullivan, Jr., 49 of Sacramento, at 2:23 p.m. at nearby Old Mill Park.
As a precaution, authorities placed Old Mill Elementary School briefly under lockdown. The school sits directly across the street from the park, where authorities pursued the second suspect.
Both men were booked at Marin County Jail. Hayden and Sullivan face charges for making or passing a fictitious check, conspiracy to commit a crime, and burglary. Each man remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bond, pending arraignment September 20.
