FREMONT — A suspect is in custody for maiming another man during a machete attack earlier this month. The victim suffered cuts to his face and head, but he survived his ordeal.
On September 16, a screaming woman phoned police to report a man attacked another man with a machete. Turns out the victim is her relative.
Police and firefighters responded to the 911 call for help. Subsequently, responders took the unidentified victim by ambulance to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Before authorities arrived, the attacker fled from a home on Rockett Drive, where the machete attack occurred. The home sits adjacent to Aqua Adventure Water Park.
During their investigation and search for the attacker, police temporarily closed one southbound lane of Paseo Padre Parkway. Not long afterward, police tracked the suspect to nearby Union City, and they arrested him.
The suspect identified as Zekria Joyaa, 28 of Fremont, was booked at Santa Rita Jail on September 16. Joyaa remains in custody because he is ineligible for release on bail.
His charges include several felonies. Joyaa’s charges are attempted murder, causing great bodily injury on a person, and use of a deadly weapon. In addition, he faces misdemeanor charges for mayhem.
Joyaa has a pretrial hearing on October 22 at the East County Hall of Justice.
