Grand Theft Auto Times Two at New Year’s Eve DUI Saturation Points
Pomona – Exploding fireworks weren’t the only illegal activities taking place on New Year’s Eve in Southern California. Between 7 pm and 3 am, the Pomona Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI Saturation Patrol, which netted arrests for Grand Theft Auto, Driving Under the Influence, and Resisting Arrest.
In all, the Pomona Police Department Traffic Unit made 25 vehicle enforcement stops. Besides the aforementioned arrests, 14 citations were issued and two drivers were cited and/or arrested for operating an unlicensed vehicle or driving with a suspended/revoked license.
High-visibility enforcement efforts such as the DUI Saturation Patrol have a deterrent effect, lowering the incidents of impaired driving. Studies have shown that 30% of California drivers had one or more drugs in their systems in fatal crashes. One study found more active drivers tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14%) than did for alcohol (7.3%). Marijuana was most prevalent drug, at 7.4%, which was slightly more than alcohol.
Drivers caught driving impaired and arrested for DUI can expect to pay approximately $13,500 in fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses, not to mention possible jail time.
