A discriminant shoplifter considered at least two pieces of clothing for himself before selecting a dark blue plaid overshirt and exiting the Macy’s at MainPlace Mall in Santa Ana on the evening of January 16. The shoplifted, long-sleeved top casually tossed over his shoulder, he left the department store, a security camera showed.
Outside, suspect found himself in the company of two of Macy’s’ loss prevention officers. He then produced a knife from a pocket in his pants and swung it at one of the store’s security officers. Police said that he ultimately dropped the clothing and fled eastbound through the mall’s parking lot.
The Santa Ana Police Department uploaded the security video footage of the incident to YouTube and other social media platforms that same evening and asked for public help in identifying the white male adult suspect.
Thanks to media and community assistance, police received several tips identifying Ryan Quintin Hancock, aged 43 and of Orange, as the suspect. Officers from the Orange Police Department arrested Hancock for two counts of robbery and one count of assault with a deadly weapon on the afternoon of February 4. Hancock was booked into the Orange County Central Jail with a $100 000 bail and an arraignment scheduled for February 6.
