MORENO VALLEY – Nathanael Colbert-Chaves, a 21-year-old black male from Moreno Valley, was arrested after he attempted to rape, then successfully robbed a 61-year-old woman at her workplace.
At 8:15 AM on Thursday, February 21, 2019, officers from the Moreno Valley Police Department responded to an emergency call at a store located at the 24000 block of Sunnymead Blvd. The suspect had allegedly entered the store to ask whether they were currently hiring. As the woman conversed with Colbert-Chaves, he forced her into a back room of the store, then attempted to sexually assault her. The woman was able to fight back, preventing her attacker from accomplishing his objective.
“After the struggle with the victim, Colbert-Chaves aborted his sexual assault and took the victim’s purse and phone as he left the store,” reported Police Investigator Gabriel Gil. “Colbert-Chaves then used the victim’s credit cards at two locations in Moreno Valley.”
The Moreno Valley citywide camera surveillance system revealed details to further the investigation, including the vehicle driven by the suspect and a partial license plate. The vehicle was later found at a home within the 12000 block of Cobblestone Lane in Moreno Valley. Once a search warrant was served, Colbert-Chaves was arrested, and evidence of the crime was found in his bedroom.
He is currently being held at Robert Presley Detention Center under charges of robbery and attempted rape. His bail has been set at $1 million.
