FREMONT — A driver with two prior DUI convictions was arrested again after an elderly woman was killed in a vehicle accident. The suspect was on probation at the time, stemming from his previous DUI convictions.
The victim, 70-year-old Erlinda Domingo of Newark, died as a result of a head-on collision. Her husband who was driving the couple’s car survived, but he sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The accident occurred on Central Avenue in Fremont on March 17th at approximately 6:15 p.m. The couple was traveling westbound when a minivan driving eastbound crossed over the center median.
Wreckage from the accident blocked a portion of Central Avenue, which was closed to traffic for several hours. Investigating officers said the driver of the minivan ran away from the scene of the accident.
Officers searched the vicinity and located the driver of the minivan, who was found hiding in someone’s backyard.
Without further incident, Juan A. Martinez, 47 of Newark, was arrested at 6:40 p.m. Martinez was taken to Fremont Jail, pending his arraignment later this week. Bail for release from custody was set at $95,000.
Presently, Martinez faces seven charges including hit and run driving causing death or injury. His other charges include driving with a suspended or revoked license and resisting an officer.
In 2016 and 2015, Martinez was arrested for DUIs involving alcohol or drugs. Martinez served time in Santa Rita Jail, but he was released on a sentence of five years of probation.
