FONTANA – Officers gave an immediate “Shots Fired” response at 1:44 AM to the scene of a tragedy. Multiple gunshots heard on the 14600 block of Mountain High Drive spurred calls from many neighbors within earshot.
As police approached the area, more callers reported shots fired in the street by a teen male seen holding a rifle. A 911 call from a terrified 12-year old girl in one of the residences alerted to her family member shot inside the home.
Officers arrived to find the teen shooter near a white pickup truck. As he hid near the passenger door, the suspect aimed a scoped AR-15-style rifle directly at the officers. One round from an officer missed the teen, who immediately dropped his gun in surrender.
Officers and medics quickly located a 50-year-old female in the house, her torso riddled with gunshot wounds. Medics transported her to a nearby hospital.
The cordoned-off area gave detectives hours to complete the investigation. They concluded the following course of events: Fabian Dusten Cardona (18), who lived at home with his mother, shot her, fled the residence with his rifle and banged on doors of at least two other homes.
Next, the teen shot at an unoccupied van in the street, broke into a nearby pickup truck, then appeared to be lying in wait for arriving officers.
Soon after, Cardona’s mother passed away while in the hospital. No one else was hurt. A motive has not been revealed for this tragedy.
Public Information Officer Rich Guerrero reported that Cardona will be booked for homicide at the West Valley Detention Center.
