BERKELEY — Two men remain in custody following reports of gunfire on April 13th near the University of California campus. Police confiscated one handgun and several pounds of cannabis when the suspects were arrested.
Both suspects are blamed for firing as many as eight gunshots at approximately 2 a.m. Responding officers recovered bullet casings scattered on the ground near the intersection of Durant Avenue and Bowditch Street.
Several individuals in the vicinity were detained for questioning, but only two suspects were arrested. Other individuals accompanying the suspects were cited for public intoxication and released.
Police investigating the gunfire searched a car associated with the suspects. Officers recovered a loaded unregistered handgun—and approximately 8 pounds of cannabis from inside the car.
At 2:50 a.m., Carlos R. Vallejopineda, 23 of Pittsburg, was taken into custody. Vallejopineda was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and marijuana for sale. He remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $330,000 bond.
However, Vallejopineda presently faces only weapons-related charges. He is charged with discharging a firearm with gross negligence. His two additional charges concern carrying a loaded unregistered firearm.
His companion, Joshua T. Kellogg, 24 of Antioch, was arrested at 2:58 a.m. Kellogg faces the same three weapons charges. Likewise, Kellogg remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $330,000 bond.
Vallejopineda and Kellogg are both scheduled to appear for a pretrial court hearing on April 23.
