SHASTA LAKE – A call came in to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday April 27th shortly after 6:00 PM about a man who had possibly experienced “an unknown mental breakdown.”
Fire and medical personnel were dispatched to the man’s residence, located at 4757 Parker Street. The female who answered the door said that the male subject put a knife to her throat and said he was going to kill her.
The suspect, remained in the house and locked himself in a back bedroom. As law enforcement had yet to arrive, the fire and medical personnel staged down the street to await their arrival and determine a plan of action. Upon their arrival, Shasta County Sheriff officers made contact with the woman who had previously answered the door and learned that she resided in the home with it’s owner Curtis Harris. The woman was able to identify the suspect at 28 year old Jesse Sanborn who at this point was inside the home and engaged in an altercation with 60 year old Curtis Harris.
Apparently Sanborn had been “exhibiting bizarre behavior for a few days” prior to the standoff. In addition, Sanborn was on probation for battery with serious injury.
Deputies initially used a PA speaker and a phone call to the suspect in an effort to get him to exit the home, however when those efforts failed and Sanborn remained barricaded in a bathroom, they were forced to take additional steps.
Deputies forced open the door but still he wouldn’t comply at which point, K-9 Hondo came to assist in the extraction. However Sanborn still resisted, fighting Hondo even after being bit by the K-9.
Finally Sanborn was subdued, placed in handcuffs and removed from the home. He made an initial trip to Shasta Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries, and then it was on to the Shasta County Jail to face charges of assault with a deadly weapon, terrorist threats, resisting arrest, interfering with a K-9 and probation violation.
