MODOC – Modoc County is located at the northeastern corner of California. The Clear Lake Wildlife Refuge and The Modoc National Forest are in the sleepy county, and the largest town is Alturas, with less than 3,000 residents. California Pines, the next largest town, has only 520 residents.
Suffice it to say – not a lot of excitement occurs in this peaceful place. However, on May 1st at 11:00 AM there was a bit of excitement in Modoc County when an an inmate being transferred from the court back to the Modoc County Jail ran away on foot.
In a coordinated effort, officers from the California Highway Patrol, Modoc County Sheriff, and Alturas Police Department set up a perimeter and locked down the local public schools.
Within half an hour, the unnamed inmate was back in custody thanks to the “public’s assistance.”
