SAN LEANDRO — Investigating officers quickly identified and arrested a man suspected of shooting another man. The suspect was in custody a few minutes after he allegedly shot his acquaintance multiple times.
Officers were dispatched in response to a report of a fight between two men. Instead of a fight, responding officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds in his abdomen and legs.
This shooting occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on May 12, while witnesses were present. The suspect fled from the residential area, but the victim was still alert when officers arrived on the scene.
The 26-year-old victim was shot at close range in his own front yard on Sayre Street. Paramedics transported the victim to a hospital, and he is expected to recover from his injuries.
Detectives learned the suspect was present at the victim’s residence when an argument erupted. Their argument turned into a fistfight—before the suspect ultimately produced a gun and began shooting.
The suspect identified as Mario J. Young, 24 of Oakland, was apprehended within minutes. Young was driving near Greenhouse Marketplace Shopping Center, located on Lewelling Boulevard, when he was pulled over by police.
Young was arrested without further incident and transported to Santa Rita Jail. His charges are premeditated attempted murder and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury.
Young remains in custody with bail for release denied. On May 22, Young is scheduled to appear for a plea hearing at the East County Hall of Justice.
