MORENO VALLEY – Multiple 911 calls sent Moreno Valley PD Officers to a “shots fired” scene targeting a group of males standing outside of a business on the block of 23500 Sunnymead Ranch Pkwy around 5pm on May 6th. Flying bullets from a reported 20-year-old black male adult wearing all black also jeopardized multiple bystanders. Thankfully no one was injured during the incident.
The area was surrounded and within minutes, officers detained multiple subjects. Further investigation was immediately begun into the shootout.
MVPD Special Enforcement Team Investigatores identified the shooter, along with several others involved. Multiple search warrants were executed in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.
“On May 20, 2019, Sterlyn Smith, a 44-year-old documented gang member residing in Adelanto, was arrested in the city of Riverside,” said Sergeant Jason Sexton of the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner’s Office. “Smith was in possession of a loaded stolen handgun. The suspect was later booked into Robert Presley Detention Center for multiple offenses, including assault and weapons charges in addition to participation in a criminal street gang.”
“MVPD and the Riverside Sheriff’s Department will not tolerate gang violence in our communities,” said Sgt. Sexton. “These criminals will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
