BERKELEY — An 18-year-old man is back in jail for his third time in less than three months. His latest trouble with the law involves a sexual assault at a homeless shelter.
The suspect in custody is Antonio Missail, identified by police as a local transient. Missail was staying at a shelter, where a young woman alleges that he assaulted her.
Her assault allegedly happened at a shelter operated by Covenant House California. The shelter situated at 1744 University Avenue offers services for young adults ages 18 to 25. An estimated 225 unfortunate individuals within that age bracket are homeless in Berkeley.
At approximately 2 a.m., police were dispatched to the shelter two blocks west of downtown Berkeley. A woman who was spending the night there on June 17 reported that she was sexually assaulted.
The victim told responding officers that she was touched or grabbed in a sexual manner on three separate occasions. She positively identified Missail as the suspect responsible for sexually assaulting her.
Officers quickly located Missail who was still inside the shelter and arrested him. He was taken to Santa Rita Jail, where he remains in custody in lieu of $120,000 bond.
Presently, he faces charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and sexual battery. Incidentally, he has two prior arrests on his record for assaults earlier this year.
