Milpitas – The California Highway Patrol has located the wanted suspect who shot and killed a man along Interstate 680 near Milpitas.
The CHP, as well as Milpitas police detectives, were on the lookout for 26-year-old Kevin Anthony Alaniz, a known relative of shooting victim 30-year-old Matthew Rios. It is believed that Alaniz shot and killed Rios while they were both driving northbound on Interstate 680 near Landess Avenue in Milpitas.
Homicide investigators followed up with friends and family and it was soon determined by witness accounts that the vehicle associated with Alaniz was seen driving away after shots were heard and Rios was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds behind the wheel of his car.
Alaniz went missing after the shooting. Rios was informally known to the victim as his possible new brother in law; Alaniz’s father was to marry Rios’s mother.
But that was just the beginning of Alaniz’s shooting spree. In order to evade police, Alaniz had camped out in the area of Big Sur. The trail leading to Mount Manuel winds back some 4.5 miles before reaching the summit.
It was here that two hikers ran into a man believed to be Alaniz, hiding out from police after the freeway shooting that ended Rios’s life. Alaniz approached them and threatened them.
The hikers, fearing for their lives ,turned back. After the hikers first ran from Alaniz, he approached them a second time and fired off several rounds towards them.
The Monterey Sheriff’s Department was called on Saturday evening to help park rangers locate the suspected shooter. Drawing a perimeter, a team headed out to find the shooter. Alaniz was seen hiking down the trail with a backpack and what now is being described as a black pistol held in his waistband.
Officers yelled at Alaniz to stop, but he refused their commands and approached the officers, pulling the loaded weapon from his waistband and firing towards officers.
Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. It was later determined Alaniz had an outstanding arrest warrant for the murder of Rios on June 17, 2019. According to authorities, 300 rounds of ammunition were found in his backpack, in addition to the loaded Glock 20 SF 10mm pistol legally owned by Alaniz.
