Santa Barbara County – The night of July 12th was not a good time to be either a pedestrian or motorist anywhere near Del Playa Drive in Isla Vista.
It was just after 9:30 p.m., according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, when the community immediately adjacent to the UCSB campus saw “about a dozen people left temporarily homeless” by the mayhem created by 18-year-old Goleta resident Danyale T. Guy from behind the wheel of his car.
CHP spokesman Officer Jonathan Gutierrez reported that investigation revealed Guy was seated in his Nissan with the engine running in a parking lot, “with a female pedestrian standing next to the open driver’s door.” At that point, Guy abruptly accelerated the car in reverse, knocking the female to the ground, then smashing into three other cars parked nearby.
Undaunted by that collision, Guy then drove the car quickly forward and directly into a “neighboring building,” breaking a residential gas line and causing “significant structural damage.”
Guy then accelerated the Nissan backwards again, striking a fourth parked vehicle before racing off and leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. Responding CHP units and SBSD patrol officers investigated the calamity while a medical response team treated the female pedestrian for minor injuries at the scene.
An arrest warrant for Guy was issued the following day, prompting him to contact the Santa Barbara County Public Defender’s Office, “indicating he wanted to turn himself in.”
Guy was taken into custody on July 15th and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, where he was booked on multiple motor vehicle violations, leaving the scene of an accident, and assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in custody with his bail set at $30,000.
