GILROY – A day of revelry and celebration turned deadly over the weekend when a gunman opened fire on a crowd of people. Three people were shot and killed and twelve people were injured by a shooter at the annual Gilroy Garlic Fesitival on the evening of Sunday July 28th.
19-year-old Santino William Legan, armed with an SKS rifle, killed a 6-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a man in his 20s. Multiple other victims suffered non-legal injuries, and those victims range in age from 12 – 69 years old.
The shooting occurred around 5:40 p.m. after the shooter cut through a fence to gain entrance to the facility and avoid security. Three officers of the Gilroy Police Department, already on scene at the festival, shot and killed the shooter within one minute of when the incident began.
The band Tin Man on stage and was playing an encore when the shooting began. Singer Jack Van Breen heard someone yell, “Why are you doing this?” The person (shooter) responded, “Because I’m really angry.”
Understandably, the investigation now seeks to determine a possible motive, as well is if there was anyone else involved in the shooting.
