James Porter, a 28-year-old resident of Colton, was arrested after he physically assaulted a 12-year-old girl inside the car he was attempting to steal.
San Bernardino police responded to the attempted carjacking report at 7:29 AM on Monday, July 1, 2019. The incident took place in the parking lot of Bank of America, located at 22365 Barton Road in Grand Terrace.
Only minutes before, a man had parked his car and left it running while he went to the ATM. His 12-year-old daughter waited inside the car. The suspect, James Porter, “entered the vehicle and physically assaulted the victim, numerous times, as he shouted at her to exit the vehicle,” the release read. The young victim sustained severe injuries to her face before her father raced back to the car, causing Porter to flee.
Three hours later, police again responded after receiving multiple reports that a suspicious man matching Porter’s description was trespassing on their property, which was located near the Bank of America. Police were able to locate and arrest Porter.
“Deputies discovered the suspect… was on Post Release Community Supervision – PRCS for attempted vehicle theft as a result of CA Assembly Bill 109,” the release read. “As part of Assembly Bill 109, to comply with a U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring the state to lower its prison population offenders with non-violent, non-sexual and non-serious convictions will serve reduced sentences in [county] jails and be placed on local supervision through county Probation.”
