The incident start with a call to the Napa Police Department about a man passed out in white Honda behind the Raley’s on Soscol Avenue on August 5th. However, the man was apparently alert enough to start the car and leave before police arrived.
Officers with the NPD, however, spotted the vehicle near Maxwell Bridge. The driver did not stop at the officer’s command, but took off and began to lead a pursuit.
Officers deployed a spike strip and the driver swerved to avoid it. In doing so, he caused the car to roll over onto its roof.
The passenger, Oakley resident Logan Bogan was injured int he crash, and later died at Queen of the Valley Medical Center.
The driver, Oakley resident Jonathan Thomas McCarthy was also taken to the hospital.
The vehicle had apparently been stolen out of Antioch. McCarthy was then taken to the Napa Police Department and arrested on the charges of evading resulting in injury or death, possession of stolen property, vehicle theft and murder in the death of the passenger in his vehicle.
MaCarhty has had numerous previous run-ins with the law –
- December 3, 2018 – possessing a controlled substance while armed with a gun;
- September 5, 2018 -conspiracy, grand theft, stolen property;
- February 3, 2015 – possession of controlled substance and paraphernalia.
